    Bethesda has a population of 61,000 and is the state's 11th largest city. It is located in the greater Washington DC- Arlington- Alexandria, VA metro area just north of DC. It has been consistently ranked among the most liveable and affluent cities in the whole country. This means real estate can be quite expensive, however, the area as a whole is much more reasonable and only slightly higher than national averages. This is a densely populated, busy, and urban area of the country. Just a few of the many cities/suburbs around Bethesda include Potomac, Silver Spring, Rockville, Wheaton-Glenmont, and Hyattsville. In Virginia, off-base housing within a 20-30 commute of the warfare center are McLean, Vienna, Reston, Herndon, Falls Church, Arlington, Annandale, and Alexandria.

    About the Installation
    The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division specializes in ship acoustics, stealth technology, and hydromechanics. Other areas of research and testing include water tunnels, deep ocean pressure tanks, and hydrofoil and air cushion vehicle test units. Acoustic ship silencing of submarines is another area of research and development. The Carderock Division is located in Potomac, Maryland and was previously known as the David W.
